O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. The singer made it through to the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her singing ability. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. However, she was a major loser in the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol straight away.
